ABOUT
Artistic Statement
As a Québécois playwright raised in a minority culture and language, now living in the United States and writing in English, I often find myself at crossroads – between languages, between cultures, between social classes. So I quite naturally take on the role of facilitator: I invite people who might not normally encounter each other to engage in meaningful conversation.
I feel passionate about using theatre to bring social justice and environmental issues into the public discourse. I believe artists have unique skills that can help us transition to a more just and regenerative world. Given how extremely polarized our society has become, narratives that can move us away from divisive politics and apocalyptic thinking are urgently needed.
My plays wrestle with colonial and patriarchal constructs and gender roles. They explore the balance between responsibility towards the self and responsibility towards others. They seek to understand loss in all of its harrowing manifestations – but not without a good measure of humor thrown in. They search for new mythologies and rituals that can reconnect us to the natural world and to each other.
And since the world is so much more than the human species, my writing often gives voice to the amazing creatures we share this planet with, and to the beings who dwell in other realms. They too have knowledge and wisdom worth listening to. And perhaps most importantly, they have been around for much longer than we have.
